Lightweight spackling compound, wallboard compound or plaster
Paper, 18" x 24" sheets: blue/green/rust/metallic handmade, one; various map-print, three
Matte-finish paper adhesive or découpage medium
Textured fibers to match papers, 2 yds.
Metallic copper paint pen
Serrated knife
Candle stub or paraffin
Ruler
Fine sandpaper
Disposable gloves, several pair
Waxed paper
Large, plastic bowl
Water basin
Paper towels
Scissors
Fabric glue

| Instructions |
| Note: Drying time is significant, so plan accordingly. |
| 1. Wax serrated knife with candle stub or paraffin. Cut thin slice from rounded bottom of foam half-ball so it will rest flat on work surface. |
|
2. Put on disposable gloves and cover work surface with waxed paper. Use hands to spread thin, even layer of spackling compound or plaster over inside and approximately halfway down outside of bowl; let dry. Turn bowl over and apply to remaining areas; let dry.

| 3. In same way as bowl, cover foam balls with plaster or spackling compound; let dry on waxed paper. |
| 4. When dry, very lightly sand balls and bowl with fine sandpaper; wipe clean. |
| 5. Cover work surface with clean sheet of waxed paper. In plastic bowl, mix two parts paper adhesive to one part water. Note: If using découpage medium, do not dilute with water. |
| 6. Tear several strips from handmade paper, varying size as desired. Put on gloves. Dip one paper strip at a time into glue/water mixture and then press to foam bowl. Use fingers to smooth additional glue mixture over paper strip. |
| 7. Continue applying paper strips until inside of bowl is completely covered, as well as rim and upper half of outside of bowl. Let dry. Turn bowl over and repeat to cover remaining areas; let dry. |
| 8. Repeat Step 6 to completely cover foam balls with map paper. For variety, cover each larger foam ball in a different print, and then repeat same print on one or two smaller balls. Let dry on waxed paper. |
| 9. Tear several narrow strips of map paper and apply around upper edge of bowl in same way as before; let dry. Use paint pen to add random highlights around bowl rim; let dry. |

10. Apply thin line of fabric glue around circumference of each ball. Adhere fiber to glue line; trim excess. Let dry. Place balls in bowl.
