Fabric: 1/2 yd. plaid flannel; 1/8 yd. check
Wooden dowels: 1/2" x 35"; 1" x 36"
Wooden letters: "WELCOME", 1-1/2"
Wooden triangle, large (nose)
Cardinal, 6"
Comical eyes, 42mm, two
Rusty tin star, 4"
Acrylic craft paint: orange, dark green, white
Paintbrush, 3/4" flat
Buttons: 5, 1" black; 4, 1" burgundy; 9 assorted
Gloves
Spanish moss, small amount
Thread, #5 pearl cotton, black

INSTRUCTIONS:
(NOTE: When assembling snowman, do not glue legs, head and arms in place. He will be easier to pack away for storage if he can be disassembled first. Next year, reassemble to display again.) |
| 1. Place a foam egg in each boot, trimming if necessary to fit. Glue in place. |
| 2. Cut 1" dowel into two, 18" lengths; paint white. Insert dowel firmly into each boot; glue in place. |
| 3. Body: Cut foam sheets into two, 10" x 27" pieces. Cut foam using serrated knife; for easier, smoother cuts, wax knife blade with an old candle. Cut eight 3" lengths of 16-gauge wire; the wires are inserted between the foam sheets for extra hold. Insert and glue wire pieces in two rows, several inches apart, in one foam sheet. Spread glue on wires and foam sheet and press remaining foam sheet on top, sandwiching wires between. Be sure edges are aligned. |
| 4. Wrap body like a present in a double layer of quilt batting, gluing and pinning batting to back. Using awl or other sharp tool, make two holes in bottom of body, 3" in from either edge. Insert legs; snowman should stand on his own. DO NOT glue legs in holes. |
| 5. Cut 1/2" wooden dowel into two 13" and one 9" lengths; paint 13" lengths white. Let dry. |
| 6. Cut 20" x 20" double layer of quilt batting; gather around 5" ball. Tightly wire gathers with 26-gauge wire; trim excess batting, leaving 1" tail. With the gathers at the top of the head, make a hole in bottom of ball and insert 9" dowel 3" deep. Make a hole in top of body and insert head. DO NOT glue in place. |
| 7. Poke holes in face for eyes; insert and glue eyes. |
| 8. Paint nose orange; let dry. With knife, cut slit in quilt batting for nose; glue nose securely in place. |
| 9. Glue 1" black buttons to face for smile. Blush cheeks. |
| 10. Glue together 9" x 36" and 9" x 18" lengths of plaid fabric, creating a 9" x 54" scarf. Tie scarf around neck of snowman; spot glue scarf to shoulder. Bend in half a 5" length of 16-gauge wire and use to pin scarf in place under knot. |
| 11. Glue 3" x 5" plaid patch to bottom left of body. Glue tin star to patch. Thread strand of pearl cotton thread through 1" burgundy button; tie off thread in front of button. Glue button to star. Thread remaining three burgundy buttons in the same manner. |
| 12. Cut out three, 2" patches of check fabric; stitch one burgundy button on each patch. Glue patches in a row below the neck (see photo). |
| 13. Paint letters dark green; let dry. Glue letters along right-hand side of snowman. |
| 14. Cut 3" ball in half. Insert 13" dowel into 1/2 ball, with cut side facing forward. Slip glove onto hand; tie around wrist with a 9" x 1/2" strip of plaid fabric. Cut 2" plaid patch and glue to palm of mitten; glue button in center. Repeat for other hand. Poke small holes in the sides of body, 5" from top. Insert arms at an angle with flat palms facing front and rounded portion to the back. DO NOT glue. |
| 15. Glue hat on head. Glue a 1-1/2" strip of plaid fabric around hat brim. Make a small "nest" from Spanish moss, a few strands of pearl cotton thread and small fabric strips; glue to left side of hat. Glue cardinal and several buttons to nest. |
| 16. Tie 1-1/2" x 18" fabric strip in shoestring bow; glue to top of boot; glue button to center of bow. Repeat for other boot. |
