NOTE: Cornice finished size is 42" wide x 12" tall x 6" deep. Cornices can be made for any size window by altering the dimensions of the pieces.
INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Refer to diagram to insert six wood picks evenly spaced along 12" edge of one foam sheet; apply hot glue to ends of picks and then push them halfway into foam. Spread glue on same edge of foam and protruding picks. Align this edge with a second foam sheet and push them together firmly to make a single 72" x 12" sheet.
2. Refer to diagram and use a yardstick and fine-line marker to draw cornice pieces on foam as follows: two 5" x 12" ends; one 42" x 12" front; and two 20" x 5" tops. Wax serrated knife with candle stub or paraffin to cut out foam pieces. Follow Step 1 to glue the two 20" x 5" tops end to end with three wood pick joints, forming a single 40" x 5" top.
3. Refer to diagram to glue foam pieces together firmly to form cornice, using wood pick joints where indicated. Begin gluing 40" x 5" top between two 5" x 12" ends, then glue 42" x 12" front onto top/end assembly.
4. Cut a 59-1/2" x 23" strip of batting and center on front of cornice. Wrap batting around all cornice surfaces to inside back of foam, mitering corners. Trim batting to leave a 1-1/2" allowance on inside back and glue to secure. Trim excess batting at mitered corners.
5. Cut borders from black/white mini-check fabric as follows: one 62" x 11-1/4" top and one 62" x 5-1/4" bottom. Press under 1/4" along long edge of each border. Position top border so it's centered from side to side, with pressed edge extending 2" from top of cornice front and ends. Temporarily pin in place. Repeat for bottom border, extending pressed edge 2" from bottom of cornice front and ends. Hot glue fabric borders in place, mitering corners and neatly wrapping excess fabric to inside back of cornice. Begin gluing at center and work out to ends, smoothing fabric over batting and removing pins as you work.
6. Cut center panels from black/white toile fabric as follows: one 43-1/2" x 8-1/2" front and two 9-1/4" x 8-1/2" ends. Note: Plan cutting for optimal placement of fabric motifs. Press under edges 1/4". Temporarily pin center panels to cornice, abutting edges of mini-check borders; glue in place.
7. Glue 1/2" black cord to top and bottom edges of toile center panels where mini-check borders meet. Extend ends of cord onto inside back of cornice 1-1/2"-2". To prevent cord from raveling, tape cord at desired length and then cut at center of tape. Glue 3/16" red cord on both sides of each black cord. (Note: Refer to photo for placement.)
8. Cut lining from black/white mini-check as follows: one 62" x 5-1/4" for top and ends, and one 41" x 11-1/4" for front. Press 1/4" hems in edges of all pieces. Temporarily pin lining pieces to corresponding areas on inside back of cornice and then glue.
9. To install cornice, screw angle brackets to wall at opposite sides of window and then slide cornice over them. Secure cornice to brackets with T-pins.
10. Optional: Hang sheers behind cornice or decorate a window shade to accompany it. For the shade, fuse a horizontal band of matching fabric to it and embellish the edges with cord, or simply glue on coordinating fringe.
