INSTRUCTIONS
(Note: STYROFOAM Brand Products cuts easily with a serrated knife. Wax the knife with paraffin or candle stub for easier, smoother cuts. To cut, work on a flat surface and use the knife like a saw.)
1. Cut the following from the 1/2" thick sheet of STYROFOAM* Brand Products: 1 - 7" square bottom, 2 - 4" x 7" sides, 2 - 4" x 8" sides, 1 - handle (follow pattern in Figure 1). Cut a notch 1/4" deep and 1/2" wide in the center top of both 4" x 7" basket sides.
2. Cut the following from the print fabric: 1 - 6-1/2" x 32-1/4" strip for sides, 1 - 8-1/2" square for outside bottom, 1 - 3-1/4" x 35" strip for handle. Cut the following from the solid fabric: 1 - 4-1/4" x 28-1/2" strip for lining, 1 - 7-7/8" square for bottom lining.
3. Cut the following from the posterboard: 1 - 7-1/2" square for bottom, 1 - 6-7/8" square for bottom lining, 2 - handles (follow pattern in Figure 1)
4. To Assemble Basket : Working on a flat surface, join together the sides and bottom using pins or toothpicks. (This assembly is only temporary so you can check for fit and squareness.) Trim basket pieces if necessary or "sand" gently with a scrap of plastic foam. Disassemble basket. Spread low melt glue along one edge of basket bottom and press a 4" x 7" side in place. Repeat for opposite side. Spread glue along one remaining bottom edge and two side edges. Press in place 4" x 8" side. Repeat for back side of the basket.
5. To Cover Basket : Glue one end of 6-1/2" x 32-1/4" fabric strip to basket so it just wraps around one corner, and 1" of fabric extends above the basket. Wrap fabric around basket. Glue a hem in remaining end and glue in place at basket corner, covering first end. Spread glue around inside edge of basket. Mitering corners and clipping fabric as necessary, glue extra 1" of fabric to inside of basket. Clip fabric at notches; trim to 1/8" and glue fabric in notch. Turn basket upside down. Mitering corners, glue extra fabric to basket bottom. Center posterboard bottom on the wrong side of the 8-1/2" square of print fabric. Mitering corners, glue excess fabric to wrong side of posterboard. Glue covered posterboard to bottom of basket. Gently weight with book and allow to dry.
6. To Line Basket : Glue a 1/4" hem in one long edge of the basket lining (4-1/4" x 28-1/2" fabric strip). Glue inside basket, positioning hem near top edge, and overlapping at basket corner. Miter corners and glue excess to basket bottom. Check fit of posterboard basket lining; trim if necessary. Cover with fabric as in Step 5. Glue in place inside basket.
7. To Make Basket Handle : Glue together two posterboard handles and plastic foam handle with plastic foam in the middle. Weight with book and allow to dry. Right sides together, stick a 1/4" seam along long edge of the 3-1/4" x 35" fabric strip. Trim seam to 1/8". Turn right side out. Gently shirr fabric tube onto handle, keeping seam to under side of handle. Turn under raw edges and glue to ends of basket handle. Dip one end of each 2-1/2" floral pick into glue and insert halfway into ends of basket handle. Place glue on other end and gently insert picks and handle into slots in basket sides. Let dry.
8. Glue 1-1/2" wide lace along top edge of basket. Cut to fit and glue pearl strand near the top edge of the lace.
9. Remove silk flowers from stems and glue to top edge of basket. Cut apart remaining pearls and glue to centers of silk flowers.
10. Make bow from 1-1/4 yd of 1/8" wide ribbon and glue to base of handle. Trim with additional flowers, pearls and leaves. Cut two 6" lengths of 1/8" wide ribbon and tie each in a bow. Trim tails. Glue inside basket where the handle meets the lining.
