Seashell Keepsakes Designed By: Kathleen George
Typical Project Completion Time: 2-4 hours (does not include drying time)
Bring the beauty of the ocean to your home with these simple projects made with shapes of STYROFOAM* Brand Products. A cone, ball and sheet, and step-by-step instructions from The Dow Chemical Company are all you need to display the mementos of your summer vacation by the seashore.
CRAFTING TIPS
Cutting. STYROFOAM Brand Products cuts easily with a serrated knife, hacksaw, floral knife or X-actoŽ knife. Wax the knife blade with an old candle for easier, smoother cuts.
Gluing. For a fast, sure bond, use a low-temperature glue gun. Hot glue guns can be used but might melt a small portion of the foam. (Please follow manufacturers safety instructions when operating a glue gun.) White craft glue is a tried and true favorite for STYROFOAM Brand Products; use florists' picks or toothpicks to hold pieces together while drying.

INSTRUCTIONS: Seashell Topiary
1. Push a pencil into bottom of cone for easier handling. Work on small areas of cone at a time and begin at the bottom with larger shells. Spread thin layer of glue over small area; sprinkle with sand. Tap cone over trash can to remove excess sand.
2. Put additional drop of glue over area where each shell will be placed. Firmly push shells directly into cone to a depth of 1/4". Continue covering with sand and shells over entire cone.
3. Glue wire or toothpick into bottom of starfish; push wire or toothpick into top of cone.
4. When glue has dried thoroughly, spray with 1 to 2 coats of acrylic varnish.
5. Trim disc to fit snuggly in top of pot. Spread 1" band of glue around top outside edge of disc and sprinkle with sand. Center cone on disc and glue to secure. Tie strip of raffia around pot.
